The Open Championships
This is the biggest national tournament for 5-pin bowling.
To qualify consists of 20 games. 10 games one sunday, then 10 more games the following sunday. From those 20 games, the top 3 men and ladies make singles and the top 6 make up the mens and ladies teams. After that the next 3 men and ladies join together to form a mixed team. There is also a senior division.
Once all of the teams have been made and the coaches have been selected for each team, the next round is the Provincal Championships, which take place every year over Easter weekend. There are 13 zones in Southern Ontario, so our Niagara teams will play each of those zones once. Then the top 4 teams in each division will take part in the stepladder finals on the last day of the event. From there the winning teams will get to advance to the National Championships, typically in May.
At the National Championships, the winning teams earn a gold medal, there are also silver and bronze medals as well. In addation to the team medals, the top 5 men and the top 5 ladies will be named to an overall All-Star team of the best bowlers in all of Canada.
Our Niagara teams have gone to the Nationals many times, and have won bronze, silver, and gold medals. We have also had a few of our bowlers named to the All-Star team.
The last Niagara team to win a gold medal at the Nationals was our 1986 Mixed team.
And the Niagara bowlers that have been named to the All-Star team have been...
Don Betts, Bill Williams, Ralph Eckhardt, and Ferne Wendel.
Not verified, but I believe there are some others as well...
Paula Cullen & Connie Ward each won a gold medal in ladies singles, which would presumably have earned them both All-Star medals as well.
1974 Niagara Mens team also won a gold medal.
Marj Summers possibly won a ladies single gold medal (and possibly all-star medal) in the 1960s.
